Lewis Gitter
is a 31-year-old Peace Corps Volunteer serving in Donetsk, Ukraine, as part of the Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) program. He teaches at the Donetsk Institute of Social Education, focusing on the Translator/Interpreter department as well as the Pedagogical department.
In addition, he is a volunteer at the Magic English school in Donetsk, and has volunteered at Hesed, a local social services organization helping the Jewish community. Besides his teaching responsibilities, he also has started an English club for the students, which is designed to continue running after his service has ended.
Lewis has a varied background. Before arriving in Ukraine, he was the Applications Development Project Manager for Village, Inc., the world's largest online womens' community website. He also worked as Senior Project Manager and head of both Project Management and Creative departments for a large global Internet agency. He has also been a freelance journalist.
He was born in Philadelphia, PA, and at the age of 11 moved to Atlanta. He attended Georgetown University in Washington, DC, where he received his BA in Psychology. He then went on to Temple University in Philadelphia where he earned his Masters in Journalism. He lived and worked in New York City for the last five years before joining the Peace Corps.
